Your uncle may have sold the original stone during the Depression. A friend inherited a beautiful cameo en habillé dating to that same period from a great aunt. She has had them replaced, but when it came to her, the spaces for the 5 little diamonds were empty.

Synthetic red corundum was developed well before blue. If the ring was indeed made when this style was first in fashion, the synthetic sapphire may have been quite a novelty. I was going to make the comparison with Linde stars & came across this account of their development, which starts off with some info about synthetic 'sapphires' that is new to me.

Back when, jewelers did some goofy things. The plastic might be original; I found a 20k Buddha pendant with Chinese hallmarks and a plastic stone once. It wasn't old at all. The stone was meant to be in there.

    Could the stone be tanzanite?

Just a little update, took this to a valuation day at auction..They confirmed what was suspected, real diamonds and synthetic sapphire. Since it does not fit my partner its going to be sold.

Thank you for your help everyone:)
