Tyeldom, I have beads similar to the ones in your rectangular piece. I think they're at least as old as the 20s, and could be older. They are generally called "French jet," meaning glass beads made to look like jet beads.

That's assuming they are glass, and not jet. :)

I have a collection of beaded purses and other items and I do think most of your 'whatnots' are Iriquois made for tourists. There were all kinds - scissors holders, picture frames, pincushions. The large white tubular beads are the giveaway. Floral patterns are usually woodland tribes.

My first thought on those was Jet as well. Rub them on some unglazed porcelain, if it leaves a brown mark they are Jet.

    And speaking of Jet,

I am in the market for some Jet buttons (4) so if anybody has anything shoot me a message.

My wife enters knitting/crochet in an exhibition we have here locally. She showed me what she plans on entering next year. A pair of white gloves with a couple buttons on each. I think the Jet buttons would make the pattern rock. I am going to surprise her in a couple months with some Qiviut Wool for the gloves.

I'd like to help you, and I have jet beads, but I used to be a beader and I keep all my beads. (Rubs hands together gleefully.) I haven't beaded in years, but I'm still a bead-a-holic.

I might have vintage black glass buttons with the right look that I'd be happy to give away, but doubt I have any that are real jet.

If you're interested, please message me about size, quantity, etc.

    Pat,

Well the Mrs decided to start on her gloves tonight so I had to let the cat out of the bag. I showed her this thread and your generous off for buttons. Here is a picture of the gloves. It looks like she will need 6 buttons (10 mm or just over 3/8")

RATS,,,,,I looked but no small black buttons. Made me realize that I need to really organize as I was going through the clutter in the eBay room, hall closet and my bedroom gathering what buttons I could find. Still can't find my favorite buttons I organized a few years ago.:arghh:

Pat you take fantastic button pics. I got lazy and video taped what I found so far,LOL. So here goes, pathetic video but what can I say???:p LOL.

A couple pics before I decided it was too much work.
The video has celluloid japanned backs, bakelite, glass, and other cwap,1900 to late 80's. Since I was a sewing fanatic I cut off buttons off all discarded clothes plus bought what I liked. Some are from my clothes as a teen.

The pics are a box of wooden buttons, unsorted shell buttons and last, my fave, rhinestone buttons.

Shiloh, you have some neat beads and buttons and related stuff. :)

The little strawberry purse is adorable. Do you know its origin? I have a few older beaded bags and love them. Yours is nice!

I think I still have a couple of bangle bracelets with the same kind of tight all-over beading around a straw center. My dad got them, I think in the early '60s. They were from Africa, and he may have done an ad for them (he had a small ad agency in NYC), but I'm not sure about that.

The photos I posted were ones I used in listings, so I had put in extra effort. And Photoshop gets a lot of credit for them! ;)

Pat, the strawberry coin purse I got when I was about 17 from my Dad's friend. The beaded NA design purse I got from my late MIL, the inside is lined is soft leather. The beaded over straw bangle I got at the thrift.

    PS
I love beaded bags and clothes. I have a black sequin backless dress I love with the matching shoes.:)

Also a beaded top,a beaded shawl and other OVER THE TOP clothes. :p Oh, many years ago I saw a beaded and sequin very colorful jacket made in India. It was only 5.00 so I grabbed it. I was leaving the Thrift and aa gal ran after me and offered me 50.00 for it. Of course I apologised and said no thank you. Its too big for me but one Halloween I dressed my BF as a rocker and he wore the jacket and a wig,LOL. Here is a pic. phpLHkMJ5AM.jpg

We did, he was in a band and we were in a garage at a Halloween party. Then the cops came due to a noise complaint but after they got off duty they came back to listen. :D

OK, I rounded up most of my beads, and the like. I gave my white and turquoise hanks to my youngest daughter about a month ago then I saw I didn't have any duplicates.:( Oh well, when I die she gets all my beads anyway :arghh: phpRYqzooPM.jpg phpAwoFWUPM.jpg The long hanks are Czech.

The items in the circular containers are semi precious, bone, coral, etc.
