Circumstances, is all I mean (and I think yourturn would agree).

Had to look it up. From Wiki
De gustibus non est disputandum, or de gustibus non disputandum est, is a Latin maxim meaning "In matters of taste, there can be no disputes" (literally "about tastes, it should not be disputed/discussed"). The implication is that everyone's personal preferences are merely subjective opinions that cannot be right or wrong, so they should never be argued about as if they were. Sometimes the phrase is expanded as De gustibus et coloribus... referring to tastes and colors. The phrase is most commonly rendered in English as "There is no accounting for taste" (or "There is no accounting for tastes").

Designing a good product doesn't cost more than a mediocre one.

    But whatever.

I can't see where I said anything about money?

Taste seems to me to be aspirational, and some people link that with income.

Did anyone ever see those interviews with Michael Jackson and the stuff he picked out? All very expensive, and all nothing I'd ever want.

There is some food for thought here....
In a book by Bill Holm one can find two drawings of bracelets, one an old original by Charles Edenshaw, a very famous Haida artist; one a copy or fake made by somebody who was unfamiliar with the principles of Haida design.
I don't have a scan handy (maybe Komo does) but it illustrates very clearly that there is indeed a difference between good and bad design, within a particular school or style or tradition.

On the other hand, with many works of art, it is a matter of taste as to whether one prefers a particular designer, school, or style.
Some people find all modern Italian design to be "bad," others love it, for example. Some love MCM, others not so much.

Without being an art snob, unless you know what to look for in NWC formline structure.....I'm not sure the general population would have a good grasp of what constitutes a great work of Haida art .
I see poor workmanship being sold hither & yon for undeserved prices , after being described as from the hand of a Master carver..!

    that said.....

    Master work.....priceless

    poor design..$ 1450.

Sure; but I think the illustration of Holm's, and his explanation, makes it pretty clear to even the general population that there are differences between sloppy and elegant. As do your illustrations!

Damn - I had to google NWC formline (that's like the eleventieth thing I googled today, at least!)

North West Coast - got it!

Only slightly off-topic, but my roommate asked her BF to stabilize a cherished oak table. He put in countersinks and drilled wood screws straight down into the legs. Of course, that called for wood filler. No more wobble, next project.

After her initial freak out, she waited a week to calm before asking him to take it to a woodworker to see if it could be fixed.

He still can't figure out what he did wrong.

He never touches my things. No way, Marco!

Not weird. Just a good example of how tastes differ.

Nobody's mentioned kitsch - the art of bad taste. Sometimes there's nothing quite so satisfying as a good train wreck.

That Monkey Jesus painting saved the church it was in, financially. It was so bad it was good. People are starting to collect those Mexican velvet "paintings" too, for similar reasons. Creepy clown portraits too.

I think it's more a matter of taste than anything else. I have an opinion on what is good design in certain things but my opinion doesn't necessarily line up with others.

I think people with lots of experience dealing in a specific area will develop opinions about what is good design often based on the maker, the price, the durability etc. Are they right? Are they wrong? Probably depends on who you ask and what the current fashion is.

Styles change, fashion changes, values change.

I'm not sure that around where I am there would be a great deal of difference in price between any of the examples given by bluemoon whether someone thinks the design is good or not.
