art nouveau silver plate box help

    If I may make a suggestion. This lovely A/N box is caught in the middle of two conditions, base metal and silver plate. Polish it and it will look 'silvery' for a very short time and re-plating is going to be expensive. When I was fully active in antiques I would put a piece like this with little silver plate left and put it to the buffing wheels with a coarse soap to take the rest of the silver plate off and then polish up the brass beneath and it would finish up looking like the one in Debora's post above. A local metal polishing shop wouldn't charge a fortune to do the job for you. Only a suggestion of course.

    Thanks for the great advice

    That's definitely an option I may take

    I'll see what it's like without the tarnish first

    But like you I agree that it would look better as one thing

    JMHO.
    another victim of German Putzwut. there were more antiques destroyed by German housewives than by German armies.
