    Some surgeons have gone back to using obsidian instead of scalpels I believe, as they have a much finer cutting edge!

    To answer the original posters query regarding what is it, I was told by a friend in the museum service, to try and sit them comfortable in the hand to get a possible idea of their original use. Does it anywhere sit comfortably against the thumb for example. Is it sharp on one edge only. All slight clues.

    These are great to hold in ones hands and try and imagine someone, thousands of years ago, using that very tool! I do not collect them, but I do have a few lurking about here. Some of them are amazing pieces of workmanship. The one in the last photograph for instance is as smooth as a billiard ball!
