Mall rents are high enough that they are not likely to be making a killing. They are making a standard retail markup on items which have the art world equivalent of a "manufacturers' suggested retail price" but no resale potential on the secondary market.

Knowledgeable art buyers don't buy their art at the mall.

At my local auction, most of this kind of thing goes for a few dollars. If there are two people who want it, it might top out at $15.00. Much nicer paintings go for around $25.00. I have never seen a piece of artwork go higher than that.

This is indicative of how little the locals (dealers included) care or know about art. Makes for a good buying environment but tough for selling. In the two+ years I have had local shop space, I don't think I have sold a piece of art for $100.00 or more.

I did finally sell one for $95.00 that I originally priced $265.00. I think I had finally marked it down to $175.00 and was getting ready to pull it after sitting for a long while at that price. As I was working in the booth, it was sitting without a price and someone expressed interest in it. I told them they could have it for $135.00. They offered $95.00 and, in a weak moment, I accepted.

I probably could have sold it on ebay for as much or more. I was tired of dealing with it by then and there is always the shipping issue on ebay. The shipping of larger works on canvas for ebay sales just are not worth it unless at higher price points. Ebay, for the most part, is a wholesale art market.

I might add that, at my local auction, a newer reproduction metal beer sign will start at $25.00 and go up from there ........ Priorities!
