Ah damn, not that easy huh!? Premature was once again! I guess you could only get so detailed engraving silver so probably hard to find that small detail that would point one way or another.

I've seen large services, which were often acquired over time, with significant variance in the engraved crests, as well as the monograms (if present they can be helpful in attribution to a family), and sometimes you'll have more of the achievement that will put it all together. I only looked in Fairbairn's, but there are also different books that will sometimes show other families using crests described the same - at least there's quite a bit of information readily available on British heraldry, gets much more difficult when dealing with other countries...

To be clear, the bird on Washington's family crest was, depending on source, either a raven or an eagle...

How cool of s connection would that be! Unfortunately Washington’s bird is ripping open its own chest to feed its young. Selfish bird if you ask me.

There was a Washington signed document at a sale I was at over the summer. 9k I think was the sale price. Pretty cool.

Heh, can't hear or read 'leg of lamb' without thinking of Raold Dahl's twisted story - two of my favorite old Hitchcock episodes were his 'Lamb to the Slaughter' with Barbara Bel Geddes, and 'Man from the South' with Peter Lorre, Steve McQueen and Neile Adams...
