This kind of looks similar on the face of it, though it doesn't have the test tube inserts and looks to be much wider.

Are the glass cylinders in your piece inserts that are removable?

Candle forms is an interesting idea, though I think it would be awfully hard to get the candles out after they were hardened. Candle forms I've seen are made of metal and have a way to push the candle out.

    Hi Pat,

    No, the cylinder's aren't removable.

I agree about getting the candles out. Plus glass doesn't seem to me to be an ideal medium for hot wax.

Hmm... sounds like this is going to remain a mystery...

I'm still leaning towards bud vases or lipstick holder were lipsticks the same size early in the 20th century?

I meant to take it with me over to my mother's house yesterday to see if she had some lipsticks to try, but I forgot. I'm quite sure she has lipsticks from at least 50 years ago - she never throws anything away.

I think lipsticks were about the same size 50 years ago as they are today. Don't know about earlier than that.

I have no expertise here, but the design sure looks Art Deco-ish to me.

If someone mentioned this, I missed it.

What if this is the test tube? Set of 4 in one.
The tops look as if they should have stoppers.

If I remember correctly from ones I have had, the lipsticks from the 1930s were not only smaller in diameter, but shorter as well.
Itty bitty things compared to the later ones.

The tubes are way to deep for a lipstick holder, they should only be about an inch or so deep.

If you were able to find a similar item as a perfume bottle or other dresser item it might suggest this was a poorly designed lipstick holder.

The salt cellar and canisters have a similar pattern or decoration, which places your item closer to the kitchen, like a vase.

Your piece looks like a part of the low-rent version of a Trough Epergne like this. (see how it comes apart?)

I was curious about the mold marks inside and out. Are they sanded down? Are they "clean" marks, meaning a tight fitting mold.

Here's a deco vase with a frog insert, the auction ended May 26, 2013.

A few people have suggested that it could be a test tube holder, but glass against glass to me doesn't seem like the wisest idea.

They're much shorter than any test tubes I've seen, though I don't know if test tubes may have come in other sizes. Also, I would think the ribbed glass would be a hinderance to observing chemical reactions.

There are mold marks on the right and left side, on the outside. They seem sanded down somewhat, as they're smooth feeling, but they're not totally flush with the rest of the glass.

Okay, I schedule the auction for this evening. It's not yet live. Do you think this title covers it? LOL.

Vtg Ribbed/Hoosier Glass Flower Frog/Bud Vase, Lipstick/Makeup/ToothBrush Holder

I don't usually approach a listing this way, but just having a little fun with this one. Who knows, maybe a buyer will be kind enough to clue me in on what it is for sure.

Tie.dye, is your listing live? I tried searching for it but nothing came up.

One thing to watch out for... I think if a word in the title has a slash immediately before or after it's not searchable.

Now the "burning" question is --

Will Tie.dye.cat revise his listing to include Terry's suggestion? :shame:

Pat, I accidentally scheduled it for 11 pm PST last night, so I rescheduled it for this evening. Here's the number for when it comes up later: 261528498978

    Another ODD thought...

I know it is not the normal way, but what about a toothpick holder? The tooth picks I have on hand are only 2 1/2", and this thing is 3 inches tall - one would have to dig for one. Perhaps those frilly ended type for a buffet?

It looks so utilitarian with the ribbed glass, nothing fancy, but I saw this when I was googling around (link). Of course, I couldn't find anything like yours.
