The first way I always try is putting pressure on the opening mechanism (if there are buttons that need to be pushed in to open the briefcase then push them in) and one by one starting at the first dial slowly rotate it and listen; when the number is correct it should make an audible clicking noise and should feel different. Repeat this on each dial. This will not work on expensive briefcases.
