My mom collected a lot of collectors plates in the 1970s and 1980s..."limited to 100 firing days," whatever from the Bradford Exchange (as if there were a real market for it). She got several of them, and naive me thought that they were good investments. I got several myself when I was in college. If only I had bought some Catalina or Bauer pottery instead...I kept one first edition Russian plate, because it looks like the black lacquer boxes, and isn't too bad, but I donated each and every one to the local Goodwill a few years ago. My mom passed away last month, and wouldn't you know it, she also had the Princess Diana plate (she loved Princess Di), made after Diana's death, depicting her in the wedding dress; and also a V-J day plate. Both of those are in the donation pile.

I've been going to our local antiques store for over 20 years, and some things have been there for years. On the other hand, I think Art Deco anything still sells very well.

Long before I got involved with this crazy business we went to visit friends of ours that we had not seen in about 5 years. While she was showing me her house she pointed out a bow front china that was filled with at least 10 collector's plates. I think they were the GWTW series. It was 1987 & I knew nothing about them. I had been too busy for those 5 years moving from Maryland to Michigan to North Carolina, going back to school for my RN & taking care of 2 little boys.

I do remember my reaction to them though. All I could think of is how could someone my own age buy something that tacky. :p:p

I was at work the first time that post appeared and had to scroll fast past that one and pray nobody was watching the screen. Definitely NSFW. Kind of funny to think about now - a bullet dodged.

Me, neither! The only Waterford that I find cheap is from the Marquis line but that's worthless tat. The "real" Waterford... that's a lot harder for me to find at decent/cheap secondhand prices, and rarely seen at the thrifts in my area.

I hope she was a Windy - Gone with the Wind superfan. Otherwise... head scratched.

As for moving the plates, as someone with a strict lift limit I'd haul about five at a clip to the door for my Free pile. If they don't move as plates, offer them free as skeet targets. It's the only use I can think of for collector's plates other than sitting a plant on them. PULL!

I think pottery prices will have to be more realistic. I've been going to the LA Pottery Show for years (it was cancelled this year due to you-know-what). The venue has gotten smaller, and the crowds are getting older. I didn't notice anyone under 40 in the last few years. Yet, the Bauer, Catalina, etc. is still pretty expensive. A Matt Carlton Rebekah vase could fetch over $1k in the 1980s-90s, but we don't have Baby Boomers decorating suburban homes any more. Prices online also seem pretty high. I've been to some LA area antique stores with large Bauer collections; some of them are marked 50% off, and they still aren't moving. The exception seems to be the Bauer Indian vase, but I think that's because that style is at the Greene & Greene Blacker House in Pasadena.

My non-expert opinion is except for high-end pieces by Lalique, Steuben, etc. (and the examples by Wedgwood, Rookwood, Waterford, etc. already mentioned by others) I think it's going to be difficult moving pottery, glass, and crystal. My guess is that silver won't move well except if it's Tiffany or some other high-end maker. I was surprised to see others post that Depression Glass doesn't seem to be moving well, either. But, that's the demographic.

What do people in their 20s want when setting up a home (leaving out the exception of people buying large houses)? I think end tables, chairs, etc., things that stand the test of time and are still needed today, will continue to do well. Vanity tables and large hutches, not so much, regardless of workmanship.

I'm curious to see what others here think about the future of antique/vintage dining room sets. I have one, but I also have a formal dining room (my house is less than a decade away from being an "antique" itself). The various decorating reality shows suggest that younger buyers, with smaller spaces, prefer pub-style tables, etc., i.e. a fairly compact table with a couple of chairs, not a massive table with six chairs like what I have.

I do feel sorry for the west Texas cattle guy only getting $12 a barrel when he had gotten $160 a barrel in Bushy days.

Hey moron stop pumping til the price gets better?

Last tank cost me $12.50 to fill. I'm going road trip.
