This makes her birthdate c1803, different to the label on the photo case.

The published obituary or the handwritten note may be incorrect. This sort of error happens frequently.

Thanks for tagging me about this, @2manybooks . From what I can see, I'd say it's definitely a photographic image underneath. However, I can't tell what type for certain. I'm wondering, since the seller insisted that it is a painting, not a painted photograph -- and the seller took it apart... it seems more likely that the photo would be on paper, which would seem to indicate that salt print is more likely.

And luckily, I just found an image of a salt print photo, painted, by Mayall! Not as heavily painted as yours, @Batman_2000 -- but he definitely did this sort of thing. He might have hired somebody to do the painting. Studios often did.

Thank you so much @Figtree3 ! I’m learning a lot about early photographic processes, and the link(s) you’ve provided has been duly saved :). It’s encouraging to know that Mayall carried out these processes and gives me hope that this image does indeed belong in this frame. I haven’t yet got any further forward in my own research (busy week) but I intend to keep digging away.

I noticed that the top right of the image has marks as though a needle point has been used to prise it out, which might imply it is stuck to a board? I didn’t think to ask about that, I was reeling from the idea of casually taking it apart.

Yes, it may be mounted to a board or card.
