Soapstone “bi xi” (笔洗)--- brush washer. Common, roughed up, not much value.

I’ve had someone look at it, they said it’s jade, it doesn’t scratch with a coin, the family who gave it to me had several made in different things 1 black onyx

No took it into local jewelary shop, fully examined, she said just by feel (very cold) and close up she could tell it was jade

You can't scratch it, it is cold like jade, it was examined (through a loupe maybe?), and conclusion was jade. Also it has no chips or breakages like old soapstone usually has. I think there could still be a case for old jade.

In that case they saw the jade structure, which looks like it has short curly threads in it. A bit like tiny corkscrews floating randomly through the stone. Very cute.:D
That is typical of jade, and a way to identify it.

I would say there is really no need to test because that would be waste of money. I have had many similar such brush washer items and I gave them all to friends (those items I never paid more than $20 USD each), and I am a Chinese soapstone collector. I guarantee you it is not valuable at all.
