Just another twist - it can be difficult to interpret likely colors in 19th century photos. Though all are black and white images in this period, the photographic emulsions that were used were not equally sensitive to all colors of light. Sitters with blue eyes, for example, often had to have the eyes retouched in the final photo because they appeared white. The emulsions were relatively insensitive to blue light.
