Featured Antinous Cameo, cherry amber ???

Hello again,
Finally I have a little time to post the recent findings. I had a look with a magnifying glass, and the hair and arm looks like chopped wood, it even has a little brown to the edges. Furthermore , there are some bubbles on the arms and chest, but because it is highly polished, can’t be seen without a magnifying glass. Lastly, I have cleaned it and also used a tiny little simicrome on the sides where the frame was, it did come back as yellow brown. I did not test it with hot water.
I don’t know if it can be Bakelite, but it does look worn and old. The seller told me it was set in a high carat gold frame, I can only presume that whatever the material used in Cameo, must be precious.

Never presume this. It might be true IF seller is honest & seller is knowledgeable & high quality frames always hold high quality cameos. Sellers, even though they may be honest, do not always know what they are talking about, & the last condition is never true. A cameo should be evaluated independently of the setting, which you have been doing.

I have never seen a Bakelite cameo, & I have never seen Bakelite that shows bubbles in it. Think the piece does have some age to it, & surely Bakelite is not the only early plastic that tests positive with Simichrome. The 'chopped wood' appearance suggests this material is not as stable as more modern plastics.
