I can't tell you how badly I wanted one of these as a little girl. I had ballet lessons, no ballerina music box jewellery box. In retrospect, of course, the better use of the family's limited funds.

I hadn't been thinking of it as being any earlier than 1900. Both the history of Celluloid and of cameos of this type would allow for an earlier date, but for much later as well. Pre-WWII, reasonably sure, but that's it.

Don't know if any of you are familiar with La Tausca pearl boxes. The pearls themselves do not seem to command much, but the old presentation boxes can do quite well. The name has worn off the lining of this one, neither seller nor I knew any more about it than what we could see & price wasn't too bad Too bad @kyratango wasn't the one to work her magic on the broken cameo, although someone did fairly well with faux pearls & old glue.

The shape of the mirror reminds me of what I think is an early 20th-century trend of putting "masks" around photographs. Although this was done earlier and later as well, that particular shape reminds me of this one from my collection: The masks were put on by the photographers and printed that way. Not sure why I posted this, except to show the cute photo and mention the similar shape![/QUOTE]

That is interesting. The same 'masking' technique was done on early real photo postcards of people and landscapes.
