This reminds me that in the U.S., the word "dude" used to always refer to a man. Now, younger women call each other "dude" all the time. It seems to be only done by people under age 30 or so, though.

And I talk semi-regularly on the phone with a woman who lives in Australia who occasionally calls me "mate" over the phone -- I know that word is almost always used with men, though. Just wanted to point out that it could happen once in a while.

 

When irritated/frustrated or disbelieving, I call everyone one "dude"... usually along the lines of "dude, really?"

Disapproving is just a drawn out "duuuuude."

And I started when all the people under age 30 were in elementary school... and I refuse to stop just because the all the cool kids are doing it.

 

But that is someone you know, that is different, at least it is to me. Still sounds strange though.
