    The gold and silver guy on the Russia forum is no longer active, so that is a dead end. I'll keep looking, maybe continue the Finnish avenue.

    Right, more news from the 'Finnish avenue', the Russian gold marking system changed from carat marks (in my case 14k) to parts per thousand fineness marks (i.e. .583 or .585) in 1892.
    Sorry quirkygirl, that doesn't say anything about your earrings, unless the nick is a tiny mark. By the way, the marks on my earrings don't have a flattened area either.
