    at one point in time the Kwakiutl would paint their totem poles white.....then add the color they wanted over the white.......

    I still see a wood carving here..

    It is solid wood, I would imagine the wood would be primed before painting so the grain does not suck the paint in.

    It has been common practice for centuries to prepare a wooden surface with a white primer/filler, such as gesso, before painting.

    It could be a 1970s version. It's made of wood covered with white plaster and / or gesso and painted. Lucille, you have a good eye. :)
