Just a word of caution, don't ever try to clean a signature (if you find one) with spit or anything else, you can clean it right off. Often a signature is in a different medium than the painting and isn't as resilient to cleaning as the painting itself.

Here are two photographs of spit cleaning in process. I bought this for the frame because the painting was almost black. I gave it a quick cleaning out of curiosity and it was in better condition than I originally thought. Unfortunately, I didn't think to photograph it until I had already done quite a bit of cleaning. The tops of the trees were not even visible when I started. So the before photograph, is really a somewhat "after". The after photograph is still a work in progress but you can see the difference.

    Almost before:

When I was 13 my friend Ginny and I got backstage at a concert for some English band (now I don't even remember who!) One of them shook my hand. I went home, washed it, froze the water and kept that ice cube for a long time until my mother tossed it out. LOL. Spit, no way. Distilled water.

:hilarious: Did you put a sign on the ice cube?

Distilled water doesn't have the correct ph or proteins.
