In my experience it means something akin to cattle, livestock, or degenerate. The way he used it was saying the engraved numbers were "hideously goyish..."

    Engraved numbers ????????????

That makes no sense.....at all !

I suspect......& I've got a pretty good feeling about this......he meant to say the numbers were " hideously GARISH " !!!

That said...you need to update your experience because ...as I've shown you...the word Goy has nothing whatsoever to do with your understand of it's meaning....I mean.....not even close !

My boss was a crack up, bless his soul, always joking and teaching me naughty words. Also, his wife was a fantastic cook;) He told me that the woman has to be Jewish for the kids to be recognised since paternity can't always be proven. Maybe I misunderstood? Its been like 45 years since I worked for him.

Yes...if your mother was jewish.....you are recognized as being born jewish.
You don't have to be religious .......

Plus....his take on naughty words ......could have been skewed by his Orthodox beliefs....

My Mom told me that Morton was dis-owned by his family. When my Great, great Aunt had dinner at his home, once only, the mother broke my GG Aunt's dishes after. Also if Morton passed his brother on the street of Chicago he was ignored. :(

Yes they loved each other as far as I know.
Morton was an artist and we had several of his paintings. They were fixtures on the walls so I never paid much attention as a kid.

When we lost the house, long story, the paintings were lost along with the furnishings. The paintings were signed,Hoffstadt. For years I looked online for them and old family albums but to no avail.

Well, komokwa, I will try to see that word in a different light from now on. It is just that every time I've heard it used it has been in a derogatory tone. I do understand its root definition as "nation," but that doesn't mean it has not been used as something different over time. I suppose this lends weight to the old adage - "It isn't what you say but how you say it…"
I am a very spiritual person and, although I am not Jewish, I do respect the Torah greatly. We all have a common origin and we are all brothers and sisters. We must learn to get along. There is so much tension in folks these days. We are all in this together. We must all stop identifying ourselves by a color or religion. We needn't segregate ourselves any further. We only need to be human, nothing else matters. In this we can all be family and love.

Aren't we due an update on this? Another assay was being done and some of us are waiting anxiously for the results. I'll bet S.O.S. is having trouble sleeping while she's waiting for the news!

It is killing me too. I don't know if the sample accidentally got put in parcel post or what.... It still hasn't been delivered. I'm hoping it is just on the barge going down there. Parcel can take a month or more to and from Alaska. Some of the Christmas presents I sent are either lost or in parcel transit too! If it doesn't arrive to the assayer I will take some more shavings and try again... What a pain. Some of the presents I sent were very special things I made by hand for people.

I will let you all know as soon as I know something more.

A long awaited result finally came today!!! Yay, now we can all be a little more baffled but another step closer to some kind of answer here.

According to this xrf test, the wheel is over 80%copper with the majority of the rest being zinc with some iron. Correct me if I am wrong, but this is almost red brass or low brass and should be at least somewhat yellow. Also, this test did detect a trace of gold and lead, but not even a trace of any others. The previous test had a laundry list of trace elements.

I feel like the verdigris on the wheel does indicate a higher copper content, but the color of the metal is almost that of silver. Is a white brass possible at 80%CU?

Maybe he sent me the wrong results? Seems like it is for cartridge brass or some other common brass...
