I think my little box is Tunbridge ware but I know there are many similar types. So what I'm wondering is if my little box is Tunbridge and if there is a way to tell the age. Box measures 3½"x2¾"x1½" and will need the lid hinges re-attached.

They made it look like rattlesnake skin. Very cool.

Whoa I hadn't thought of that, I thought Xs and Os. I did notice the snake, serpent, goose heads on the top and bottom of the diamond. Maybe they are snakes:wideyed:

It does appear to be a late 19th C Tunbridge ware box.

Thanks AF and all, I was thinking it might be but it's not something I know much about.

I also was thinking about the term pixelated and how we all know instantly what that means but back not all that long ago it would have brought blank stares. Funny how language evolves.

You know it's such a sweet little box with all the work that went into it. I might just hang on to it for a bit. I kind of like the swan/snake things.

Thanks, I had not heard of Tunbridge ware. Will add it to my mental inventory of things to keep an eye out for. Very nice. (And yes, "pixelated" fits the description perfectly!)

Back in my salad days, "pixilated" meant drunk as a lord!

But I don't think I would use "pixilated" in my description if selling. Too modern of a word, I think. :)

I have had maybe two pieces of Tunbridge over the years, and, if memory serves me, they did well.

I would describe this as 'inlaid' as it is isn't it?

It looks to me that they mass produced those inlays because they don't meet in the corners. That doesn't speak to me as a fine object so why are they as 'hot' as this discussion seems to make of them?
Don't misunderstand please. I like it and would pick it up too. :)

I found a good website and I think the term for this decoration type is probably tessellated mosaic. Some seems to be quite valuable if it has ornate decoration or something of special interest. Still, fun to find in unexpected places.
