P1210714.JPG P1210716.JPG P1210715.JPG P1210722.JPG Another gift from Grandma: A souvenir of the Yukon, with a small gold nugget soldered to the handle. The marks on this are "Sterling" a lion, an "R", and 925. Of course the sterling mark and 925 are self-explanatory, but what company and year are indicated by the lion and R?

The marking is from Canada - Roden Bros.

Not to my knowledge. I'd guess that gold was cheap (relatively) when it was made, so why fake it?

According to what I could find online, a $5.00 gold half eagle weighed 8.3 grams (.27 troy oz). So, yeah, not cheap, but not exorbitant, and readily available. Not too expensive for a use like this, I don't think.

My mom picked up one when we went to Alaska in the early 60's. She collected spoons from where ever we traveled. It must have been cheap because we did not have much money back then. We traveled the entire Pan America highway in a VW bug and a Sears and Roebuck tent. She collected spoons the whole way. I was 5 years old. Haven't seen the spoon in a few years.

My grandmother collected them, more for the silver content than as memorabilia. She gave them to me when I was a child. I still have them all, and as far as I can tell, they all are before 1920. I haven't had much luck finding an up-to-date guide for souvenir spoons, though, so I don't really know if my collection contains any hidden gems or not.
