Going around to local yard sales & estate sales looking for something old or unusual when I found this yesterday! The seller had no idea what it was from, but to me it looks to professional? to be a toy - especially the glass & housing that you look through.
Does anyone know where this actually came from?
    Thanks all!

Journey, I'm having trouble seeing exactly what you have. Could you take it out of the kitchen and take pix without the other interference?

My associate suggests not military use, as the bright yellow would attract unwanted attention. Perhaps used for observing explosives or rocket tests. Clearly designed to be built in to some sort of bunker.

Bunker makes sense - as doe yellow being a warning color & if it was raised at a rocket test workers would know they better get clear?!

Serial numbers are REALLY close - whatever it is these came from same manufacturer.

I thought they were the same.

I don't know anything about this, but I'd consider the possibility that the paint is not original (it's a bit sloppy).

I'm having visions of a cheery prepper... I know, a bit of an oxymoron. :joyful:

As far as I can tell, @i need help is right -- the numbers are the same. edit: oh, I see -- ebay seller mis-transcribed the number in the description, but has it right in the title.

I think there may have been more of these tank periscopes that ended up in surplus stores than were actually used. Quite common to find them unused in the original box. The neighbors kids built a housing similar to yours for a site in their snowfort.

Yes; I'm thinking the yellow housing is home-made, using military surplus periscope parts at each end.

all_fakes is basically correct" they are tank periscopes "for lack of a better term" with an added wood housing . My friends and I made those from tank periscopes from Penninsula surplus in Santa Cruz,CA in the very early 70's and had many a war at the creek. That could even be one of them ! I suppose the military could also have re-purposed some of them too.....
