My parents divorced when I was 3 so I don't have much of my father's. My mother did save this. It's a typical souvenir stick from when he was stationed in Japan after the war. Mother-of-pearl inlay dragon. The top and bottom of the stick are halves of a bullet. Thought it might be an interesting item in case someone sees one and wonders about where it came from. This is circa 1950-51 because I was born in 49 and they were divorced in 52. I wouldn't consider this trench art because he didn't make it himself. And I know he was a Master Sargent, not an officer, but that's usually what these are called.

Most I've seen are from South Korea

The 50 cal shell was made in Missouri in 1944. That's only a 'no earlier than' date. Korea had many empty US shells to make stuff like this. Japan would have had to go another route to get shells for crafts.

I have photos of him in front of Mt. Fuji so I know he was in Japan. He also asked my mother to go over there and live and she refused. Darn. I'd have loved to be a world traveling Army brat.

I'd call it a swagger stick or pace stick rather than an officer's stick.

    Commonly used by drill sargents

I can't find the Mt. Fuji photo at the moment, but I found these. I also have a pair of Japanese dolls he sent home for me. My brother was ten years older and he got a lot of my father's things. He was an anti-clutter person and when he didn't want them anymore, he tossed them without asking me if I'd like them. :(
