I thought this was pretty cool when I saw it at a local antique shop - so I bought it for my WW2 collection.

World Telegram photo. Dated December 6th, 1941 - the day before Pearl Harbor!

Like an early texting system. You had to purchase it from a telegraph company, which generated the message and transmitted it over land lines, and you paid by the word. At the destination, it could be read over a phone or delivered as hard copy (or both). Pretty old technology. Back in the days when long distance phone calls were very expensive and difficult to connect.

Transmitted pictures were also known as a wirephotos.

I could bore you to death with the history of the telegraph, telegram and telex. One of my jobs was project managing telex switches. That was in the eighties, although I’d sent my first email in 1979. I can still read ITA2 paper tape if I’m pushed and I can code iata headers too. It was superbly reliable. I once stood in. City switch room when someone managed to shove a digger through the main bearer cable. Every damn light on the boards went out except for one quarter speed private telex circuit!
