Would this be considered Fauvist? Origin?

I purchased this painting and thought it was pretty well done. Would it be considered Fauvist? Is it German, most likely? Thanks

 

Not fauvist...here are a couple fauvist paintings...

Yours is a beautiful painting...shame about the tears in the canvas...I think worth repairing. I stink at dating/classifying art but as a guess . ..Late 19th romanticism? Where and how did you acquire it?

Thanks aaroncab and antidiem! It was an online purchase. If Romanticism, where do you think it is from? Although the corners of the stretcher bar are not European, I think the silk cord points to a European origin. Maybe English?

 

The silk cord may not be a part of the original frame. I have had some antique paintings with similar faded red cords, never thought the style to be from any particular country?

 

I dont know enough to speculate on the "where from". Where is the seller you bought it from located?

 

As above, not Fauvist. A landscape done with the impasto technique. The composition is Claudian, adopted from a formula used by the French painter Claude Lorrain. There's nothing there that would help identify the school. I'd think late Victorian too.

Thanks Debora (very informative about the Claude Lorrain technique!) and aaroncab. Looks like it came out of Virginia, but that honestly probably means nothing.

 

it could be German. the famous chalk cliffs around the Königsstuhl come to mind.

Caspar David Friedrich started a real hype.
