Wooden Tribal Bowl

Can anyone tell me about this bowl? I believe it is a tribal bowl but am not sure. Any info is greatly appreciated.

 

What sort of "Tribe" are you thinking? Where and when did you get it?

I'm not sure what tribe. An antique store said it was tribal but I have no idea.

 

When I have done my research, I can't find this exact bowl but similar ones come up with african bowl and tribal bowl. I'm not familiar with these bowls so I thought someone with experience could help me identify it. Thanks so much.

it may be from the pacific islands....but I don't recognize the carved designs...

 

Your bowl may be from Borneo, by a Dayak carver. The animal figures represent mythological creatures, part dog part dragon, called "aso".

My impression was obviously in error.

Indonesia (and Sarawak, Brunei) is the bridge between Asia and the Pacific, so there are common features. Especially so in 'Nusantara', the islands further away from India-influenced Java.

 

Yes, the attributions were rather flexible. I think it is safe to say it is from somewhere in that general region. I would think it most likely was made for sale.
