I know little about furniture. I will be selling these locally and want to describe correctly, and just make sure they don't have anything more than decorative/utilitarian value.
They are 10.5 x 10.5 x 20 inches tall, all 4 sides are the same with the same hardware, they have brass feet, and there is a mark on the inside that looks like SM 704.

    Approx. date?
Wood - mahogany? Solid or veneer?
What are these called - just planters?
Any thoughts as to pricing for an antique mall? In my research, most similar things I saw seemed to be older and kind of pricey.
    Thanks for any help! apl1.JPG

They almost look like cellarettes missing their tops .

Looks like mahogany, mid-20th century (1940s-50s). Metal is a tight fit, so it looks like these planters might have been adapted at the factory from the end table, night stand, or even - yes - cellarette form.

I don't know where you are, so wouldn't know where to begin on pricing. I will say that I've never seen anything quite like them, and that they'd make a nice, rather formal pair of planters in an old fashioned living room.

    Thank you both.
I'm in Nashville, I would say a medium range market for this kind of thing.
Any pricing thoughts appreciated, but I understand if you'd rather not.

Hmmm, tough because they're unusual, and because "brown furniture" has taken a nosedive in value.

I can imagine these going for $100-$150 for the pair at auction in the U.S. Midwest. You could set the price proportionally higher, then come down if you get any bargainers.

Never planters, those are for ice and wine. A plant would ruin them.

    But ice wouldn't?

    Nice planters!

They're zinc lined, that's what you put the ice in. Problem with plants is that their leaves drip and also fall off. Plus, the soil would be in there long term unlike ice.

So the overall height is only 20", and the zinc liners appear to rest on supports, suggesting they're relatively shallow, perhaps 5" or 6" deep? Strikes me as rather shallow for a wine cooler, would suggest since zinc was and is often used for plants, that these were more likely intended as planters/jardinieres/fern stands, and wouldn't necessarily have to be planted, ferns or other potted plants could be placed inside and covered with moss for effect. Personally, if mine, would fit with nice lift-off tops to make them occasional tables and use the interior for storage (I seem to always need more storage).

    And love the parquet floors...

Here's a larger piece with the liner only 4" deep: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/b...heepshead-walnut-planter-table/id-f_16742791/

I'm sort of fascinated by those knob-like gliders - are they actually knobs?

I do believe they are intended as plant holders to hold a potted plant, not actual planters.
Thanks for all the links and info, interesting discussion.
Cheryl mentioned the knob-like gliders. I'm not sure if you're referring to the feet on my piece or on one of the other linked pieces. The ones on mine appear to be feet, not knobs.
