Wooden maids that rattle...?

    Recently I was at an auction and came upon these beauts. They are wooden maids (anyone have any idea the culture of these maids?) and when you move them they rattle. It sounds like rocks or wooden blocks inside. They have a very worn felt bottom, and have fading paint. Does anyone have any idea what these might be? Where they came from? Or what they were used for?

    They look like nuns to me.;) Probably made in Germany.

    Thank you, they are adorable! And that movie is so sweet. Gotta love the music. Any idea why they might rattle? I think they are baby toys...? Also we can't find them anywhere and the few appraisers we've spoken to have no idea what they are or can't find them in their databases. Unless they are used for prayers......
