Wooden Carving - Any ideas

We obtained this carving from a friend who's mother owned it for many years. We believe it is around 100 years old or so but thought we'd post it here to see if anyone can identify it. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you!

 

You need to add more pictures against a plain background and what size is it?

 

It is 4.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide. Here are more photos. Thanks.

 

The figure looks like wood,but there's something strange about the base.

Possibly carved from driftwood, or from a tree root?

 

The base at least looks like it may be black coral.

that's hard to argue with......
& no matter the date ...that would be a truck load of the famous black coral !

 

I had the idea it might be black coral,but without it in hand and little information from the OP,couldn't really say.

 

I see tree-rings in several of the pictures, but maybe black coral has rings too. Or I suppose it could be black coral on a wood base.

 

Black coral does have rings which look like the rings in a tree.Most that i have viewed have a white substance where the rings have separated.
