This wooden bowl is something I picked up years ago, here in central Ontario, Canada, just because it looked so old and primitive. It measures 23 inches in length, and appears to be carved from a single block of pine. It has many old holes from woodworms but, happily, no living woodworms remain. Would this this have been a butter or dough bowl, or something else? I’ve never quite determined what it was meant to be, so would love to know your thoughts.

Take whatever comfort you may from knowing you're not alone in that, eh?

Great looking wood bowl. If anything I'd say butter bowl is a great idea. The wood is very dark from the fat in butter? And the inside surface is very rough from butter beeing scooped out with spoons or knives?

Thanks. Makes sense that the heavy, dark patina would be due to years of oxidized fat.

We used to see similar ones in shops selling 'rustic antiques', imported from Austria etc. They were called dough bowls. Fat from the dough would have the same effect.
