Featured Wooden buddha

    Found this wooden Buddha in a cupboard. Looks like it may have been painted gold at one time.

    It is a Japanese travel shrine, missing its top and a few carved panels on the throne. Nice find though, even without the 'roof' and panels.

    Wonderful find, Yan...reminiscent of The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu), a favorite Wonder of mine. Thanks!

    Excellent piece.Just to clarify-did you find it in a cupboard (as in 'for free' in an empty cupboard),or are you calling it's traveling case/shrine a 'cupboard' ?

    Found it in an old cabinet in my parents' basement (by happenstance, my grandfather and I painted that cabinet some 60 years ago.... Lots of memories here.)

    Any estimate on age? It looks old, and the wood is very dry.

    Id say around 1900 give or take,but thats a guess. What did it look like before you painted it ? If you remember of course and I probably wouldnt !
