Purchased an old dovetailed box. It's really too small to be a document box. It measures 6 1/3" x 3 1/2"...do you think jewelry? It's got a cushioned red satin lining inside. Trying to determine if it's English or American. I'm not good with wood stains, but it's a medium color with some red in it. Also, how old is it and what was it used for? Thanks in advance!

I don't know the age but I don't believe that is a dovetail corner. I think it's a splined miter joint.

It's just a search term that might be helpful finding a similar box.

The cushion lining indicates it was made to keep something from banging around in the box during travel.

Possibly a chalice for service, just throwing out an idea, not meant to be a solution.

Is there anything written on the lock ? To me it looks like it has some age,but Im no expert. Whatever it stored was considered valuable enough to have a lock.

Pics not focused well enough to tell for sure. If I had to guess, mahogany. If so, could be either US or GB.

    Or somewhere else?
I don't know if the lining is original. Boxes for jewellery and other valuables are usually lined all the way.
A travel box is an idea, but the lining in a priest's travel box would be fitted for the chalice and other paraphernalia so they wouldn't bang into each other or the sides. I think that would be the same for any object carried for travel.

I've English ones which are similar, but it's a very common style. Nice little box.

It appears to be mahogany with splined joints. A photo of the bottom & sides might provide a better clue. The exterior shot of the lock is common with American and GB furniture. Regardless I would guess the age around the 1800's. I wouldn't expect that this item would be worth anything more that the worth given by the owner.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Box looks soft enough to be pine or another soft wood..........IMHO......

English, 1st half of the 19th c, nice construction but not very valuable, nice to have the original key. £15-£20
