Hello everyone, this is my first post ever! How are you all doing?

I found this 4foot2 mirror in my parent's basement. It has been collecting dust for several years with a bunch of other stuff that i'm trying to get rid of. I was about to chop the upper part so it could fit above the sink in our bathroom, but my mom kept telling me that it was too valuable to be fiddled with. Could anyone help me figure out if this has any value whatsoever or even what this kind of mirror is called. Any info would be much appreciated. I just wanna get this spring cleaning done with as soon as possible.lol!

Took liberty of posting here for you. Looks like a nice mirror. Not sure if a period piece or reproduction. A pic of the back would help.

Thanks for posting the picture, i couldn't figure out how to put it directly in the post, since it was exceeding 2mb.

Here's a picture of the back. There's a signature at the bottom from a certain Suzan Rhodes/Rhocles.

Your help is very much appreciated!!

Looks like a Pier mirror to me, possibly Victorian era and, I vote NOOOOOO on chopping the top off.

thank you very much for the information, I'm looking into victorian pier mirrors and some seem to have a similar shape, but i cannot find an exact model as a point of price reference.

good you mention that, french empire corresponds roughly to the same time period(early 19th century) and similar style as Regency in England. Régence in France is a century earlier, though.

Using the term "regency" brings even more comparable results than "Empire"so this mirror might be english.

    Hi,
I took a "Regency" bed head board and foot and put two mirrors in them and hung them on either side of the fireplace. Everyone loved them but not as much as the antique "dealer" who offered me 10 times the price they cost me.

This looks like Gesso over wood to me and if that's the case, it was probably gilded once upon a time. The back looks like a professional restore job to repair glass or replace.

I don't think this is a period example but still a very nice mirror. It is too good to chop up. I don't think I would even refinish it. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make this look old like this .... LOL!

Couple reasons why I don't think this is period. Would not expect a beveled mirror in an early 19th century mirror. Irrespective of that additional plywood backer, I don't like the way the back looks on this. Just all too neat and aged looking.

I agree...don't chop off the top. Perhaps you can fit it in a hallway or bedroom.
