    So I bought this brooch for a song a few days ago. It was in a lot that came from Italy. I only saw one picture of it from the front. From the picture I thought it could be silver, and indeed, it is. I m not good at determining stamps, so you can imagine my surprise when I noticed this stamp was used by famous silversmith William Spratling from Taxco, Mexico.
    I think I saw the stamp is from 1960-1964, but the eagle stamp is not right. From what I could see, it should have a 'eagle30' stamp and this one has a 'eagle 63' stamp.
    Can someone please take a look and tell me if my brooch is a true William Spratling or not?
    Here in Europe we dont often see these sort of brooches, and we definitely dont have any experience in right/fake stamps of this artist.
    Thank you very much!

    Great find, and charming, neighbour.:woot::woot::happy:
    William Spratling used Eagle 1, 13, 30, and 63.

    Regarding authenticity, it looks good to my equally European eyes, but just to be sure, tagging @reader .:)

    SCORE! I'm no Spratling expert, but nobody and I mean nobody marks a fake that badly.

    Evelyb30, right, no? If I were in the counterfeit-business I would try my best to make a really pretty fake mark.:)

    Or at least readily legible. Otherwise why bother? I can't see anyone faking a high Eagle mark either, unless the knew what the marks were really supposed to be.

    Looks good to me. I know it was made in both rosewood and tortoise. If selling on the internet just list it as sterling.

    if it's real shell, probably just as well. It's not illegal to own, just illegal to sell.

    Thanks for tagging me, Peggy - though it did give me a sharp pang of envy... ;)

    As already said, looks 'right', and Spratling used real tortoise shell - and not something to be noted if selling, collectors will know the material.
