I found this for $10 at the Goodwill a few years ago, and love it - I'm still adjusting to its weird combo of grace and clunk.

So the interesting $55 antique chair I posted yesterday really doesn't need to find a home with me.

If anyone can volunteer an opinion on it, I'd appreciate it. The bent wood features alone are pretty ambitious for a garage project - the arms and apron are one solid piece. I thought it might be a model from a vintage California studio furniture designer, but never located one.

I may have put it up here back then, but I couldn't find it if I did... So sorry if this is a duplicate. No response on Design Addict - possibly too "American" :)

Well, I'd say it has the clunk down pretty well.
To American huh, well, this is wayyyyy out of my field of interest but looks like MCM met Office Depot/Staples in 1960 or some such!
It's QUIRKY! which is VERY American, even back in the old days.
    Wait for Brad/others to post.

As you say, you may not 'need' another chair. . . this does not mean you shouldn't have another. This one has a bit of style, looks quit solid & probably comfortable. I have a soft spot for chairs that are often ignored... for $10. it's worth it.

A lot of work went into that. It's very - um - idiosyncratic.

Did you refinish it???? For a $10. find, I’d say that’s a pretty pristine (AND NEAT!) find!!!!! WELL worth keeping and it has a somewhat retro/futuristic style to it, IMHO :woot::singing::happy::happy::happy:

I never cleaned it up at all, mostly because the original varnish is so clear and pretty, but the arms are just worn bare. It's not the usual old English evening out project.

    Suggestions?

By your description of the finish, it could be shellac. If it were mine and I wanted to touch up the arms, I'd try to determine what the finish is, then to feather it in...

So, that is my best suggestion to you, although I cannot even see where the wear is on the arms!

Hard to say on this one. Oak makes me think American. California?

It's probably a catalyzed lacquer or varnish which most modern finishes are for speed and toughness. Not sure if that can be fixed with hardware store products without re-doing whole chair. You should check before any attempt to "fix" the arms.
    That sounds right to me.

I agree...it looks like it's in pristine condition. I pray you don't paint...I love painted furniture, but not with something like this.

BUT IF it's not that new, you can test for shellac / varnish.
