  3. Figtree3

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think John might be the one with the longer hair at the far left. And Peter is the one with the crack running across his entire face.

Could be "doubting" Thomas from the story in John 20:26 (who had to touch his wounds to believe.) Just a thought.

We know which one isn't there.(LOL) Thomas for sure, dead center, but the other three are just guesswork. I'd say John, Peter and James from left to right, but that's just me.

Each of the main disciples has certain qualities that are traditionally assigned to them. John is younger and has longer hair. Peter is older and is sometimes balding, and always has a fairly large beard. Or at least, that is how I have most often seen them.

Ok, I haven't poked around as of yet, but I believe you all are saying the figures are: Thomas, John, Peter and James..............is that correct?

That's just a guess. Someone who was raised in the Catholic church pre-Vatican II might know for sure. I was raised Baptist.(LOL)

I'm a bit late to this thread. The last couple of days gave been preocupied with medical tests, stuff and such. I also agree with the others that this is a take off on the "Doubting Thomas" story. He is probably the patron saint of Missouri, the "Show-me" state. LOL Thomas seems to be always depicted in short dark hair. There have been several paintings of this story with the most famous being "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" by Caravaggio.

Most of the paintings of this story include at least 2 other disciples looking on as Thomas examines the wound in Jesus' side and the nail holes in his palms. The other disciples are never IDed in the paintings, but there always seems to be one partially bald that is assumed to be Peter. Like Fig said, John the younger seems to be depicted with long hair. I think you are safe in assuming that Thomas, John & Peter are portrayed in this painting, but doubt you can assume the 4th is James. There just isn't enough showing of the last man to assume his identity.

    Other paintings of this story:

I'm not far from you Evelyb...! My mother's family were New England Congregationals from the beginning of time (Pilgrim & Puritan ancestors), my father's family were Methodists from the beginning of time arriving in America on the 1st boat bringing the news of John Wesley's death - paternal grandfather a Methodist minister, I was raised Congregational in New England, married in a Presbyterian church in the South because their order of service was the closest to Congregational that my family could find after moving South, married a backsliding Southern Baptist, our daughter raised Baptist with DH a deacon now, my brother married an Anglican Church of Canada, his daughters married Roman Catholics, etc, etc... We call ourselves the ecumenical family. Believe me, all religions are very well tolerated in all forms in this family.

Mine too. Grandpa was an escaped Catholic who married a Presbeterian. His family was Jewish. The other side is a motley mix of Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists and stuff I can't trace. Mom was raised Methodist, and Dad went Baptist, and my sister is in a Congregational church that broke off recently. My "other" congregation is Messianic Jewish. I know a fair bit about Jewish traditions but have had to go out and learn the Catholic ones.
