White Glass (not milk glass) Vase

I love this vase (if it's a vase!) but can't quite figure it out.

    It's 11 1/8" tall, base diameter is 4 1/8". The top opening is 1 5/8".

The glass is semi-opaque. I put it under UV light and the more translucent parts like the rim edge and the edge of the base glow yellow-y.

The base is smooth with a ground but not polished pontil. There's a very small eyeglasses shape mark near the base edge which I think may be from pincers.

The stopper is made from the same glass but doesn't fit--way too small--and if it had a stopper, it would have to have been pretty big with the opening being 1 5/8". There was a small shard of the same glass loose inside the vase, so I'm wondering if there could have been another piece that fit between the vase rim and the stopper? Or maybe it's just a marriage?

    Any thoughts on this mystery?

    Thanks!

The yellowy glow is from the presence of Calcium, most glass made with lime (Calcium oxide) will have a yellow, or lime yellow glow, (greenish yellow).
Milk glass was not an original name, until the mid 20th century when books were published calling it that.
Opal (apparently the original pronunciation was oh pall', oh paul' or oh pal' as in my pal Sal) has been made since ancient times.

Nice vase, wish I could help with ID. You're right, that's the wrong stopper.

Thank you, Cherryhill. Opal glass it is. It's such a lovely piece, hope I can find out more about it.
