What would this primitive style piece been used for?

Definitely appears to have good age. There is a lift up hinged compartment on the top and on the opposite end a side door. I wasn't sure if this was just some weird dry sink but the compartment on top is deep so maybe it was used for grain but it is not lined. Perhaps just a homemade table with storage? Piece is located in N. Georgia but the family also had ties to Ohio. Thank you for looking! IMG_9563.JPG IMG_9564.JPG IMG_9566.JPG IMG_9567.JPG IMG_9568.JPG IMG_9569.JPG

I am getting the impression that this was made from old wood, using square nails and old hardware for effect. Looks a bit too pristine to be a truly old piece.

The knob appears to be a reproduction.

Around here, I think they call that a dough box.

Make the bread dough in it, then close it to let the dough rise.

Very possible indeed. No evidence in worming which I tend to like to see.

That is interesting. I have only see the dough boxes with the tapered body.
