So I have had this kicking around for 15 years. No one has been able to tell me what it is. Apprx 5" tall cold painted. The claws hold something and open/close with the turn screw.
    Anyone have any idea the purpose? PXL_20220626_201807904.MP_copy_600x1067.jpg PXL_20220626_201810723.MP_copy_600x1067.jpg PXL_20220626_201839512_copy_600x1067.jpg PXL_20220626_201814516_copy_600x1067.jpg PXL_20220626_201822801.MP_copy_600x1067.jpg

Beats me! I would have to describe that as an assemblage. According to Google Lens, it's the Wizard of Oz Scarecrow music box. :bored:

I wonder if it might have held a detachable scent flask.

Measuring from where to where? When they're not holding anything, how far in do the claws close? All the way to the point of touching each other? Does the mechanism allow you to lock the claws in a range of positions?

I'm trying to think what could have been held that needed to be removed/replaced fairly frequently & that might have been somewhat variable in size. Seems like an accessory for a gent's dresser top or smoking room.
