What the heck is it?

    Ok all you knowledgeable scholars out there, what is it? I have had this for about 30 years, came from a very old San Diego estate sale. Bought it because it was unique and know one knew what it was. Cold painted bronze about 6.75" tall. What he is holding the arms have a turn screw to open and close the Griffin heads that each has a recess on the back of the head for holding something. He is a Cavalier I believe you would call him. Anyway thought it might be fun to post and get some infinite knowledge from all you Gurus.

    Looks like he was holding something breakable (glass maybe?) possibly in the vertical position and his arm got bent when it got dropped breaking the whatever?
