What period?

I was given this picture recently because it had been broken and I dabble in trying to restore things, plus it has a beautiful frame.
It's much more broken than this, I just took a quick picture to see if I could digitally restore it.

When I first glanced at it the other day I thought civil war, but now that I've brought it home and looking it over, it's not matching up.

To me, it looks as though the hat is off, the infantry rifle insignia wasnt issued during the Civil War, and if the numbers represents his regiment, the 394th wasn't created til WWI.

Spanish American?
Indian Wars?

 

I wonder if he's not American at all. Maybe French?

 

My son kept saying French as well, but Im not sure

Here is a closer image of the insignia, it broke right across it


Looking at his great coat and over coat, I noticed the buttons seem further apart than the 1914 French WWI uniform, and are a closer match to the Belgium Infantry coats of WWI, but again, the hats and insignia aren't matching up for either army.

The larger image has an overcoat on a soldier to the right, but it has buttons towards the top near the collar
The smaller image's soldiers collar flaps are larger, but tight to the neck, unlike the crayon enlargement's




Im thinking it might be indian wars, especially compared to the lower left image,, I just cant find evidence of a 394 regiment?

 

Could be 594, have you tried that? Good luck with identifying!
