What on earth does this brass swan do ?

Got this brass swan in a lot of french brass-ware recently and can't figure out quite what it does. It has a water(?) channel down the back of its neck that feeds through a hole in the beak to what I presume was some kind of container that is missing. Seems to be a wall mount but I can't see how it held fluid in that position. Might be part of a larger structure but can't work out what. Anyone seen this before??
    Ideas??

Looks more like chandelier / wall sconce arm with a gap for the electric wire. Maybe there was a hanging bulb / light or a lantern that the swan was holding with its mouth. Based on the metallic wire it could've even been a stand-alone wall sconce, but maybe it was part of some bigger fixture in the past.

I think there was a bell attached to the threaded fitting and a wire was channeled through the neck, out through the wall, and presto-changeo you have a door bell (slightly more elaborate than this):

Now that's clever. I was too busy thinking about fluids to realise a cable or string would run through the channel. Must see if I can find some thing on the net now that I have a possibility. Thanks for that.
