Just wondering mostly out of curiosity. Seems it must be soft and therefore not a good choice for jewelry.

Probably Mexican. They make jewelry out of it.

It is travertine,"Mexican Onyx" is a trade/sales name and the material is not onyx/chalcedony.

Many plants and stones in the 'New World' were given the wrong names by early European settlers. They were not botanists or geologists.
Some names stuck, that's how it goes with colloquial language. Another example is certain species of American sage, which are not sage but artemisia.

It's so banged up that I'm not going to sell it; I was just curious what kind of stone it was as it didn't seem like a good choice for jewelry given all the chips and scratches.

Then again, maybe it ran through someone's washing machine or something.

I'll just pull the findings off it to reuse. Thank you for the answers everyone!

I kind of like the wear; those Mexican pieces are supposed to look a bit battered after a while.
