Some bloke in a shed made it, but where was the shed? Unless it was some kid at Summer camp! It has C clasp and a tube hinge, so it's made like it's Victorian.

Someone cut an oval out of embossed metal and folded it over the top of an existing brooch.I don't think I have seen anything like it before.

Me either. An antique dealer had it and sold it for a whopping two bucks. Never could resist a good mystery.

Popular craft. Depends upon how imaginative and artistic the maker was. I used to have a large collection in the UK but only kept 6 of my favourites. Yours is not a good example, but an example all the same. Ruskin pottery was used in some and anything the maker had at hand to use as a decorative piece. I have had them with buttons and all sorts of items incorporated in the design. You could send away for the makings from a catalogue. I would hazard a guess that the back is older than the front. It looks as if they have covered an old brooch, but that is just a guess.

I posted the ones I kept a while ago. I believe 1910's-1930's could be the timeline for this popular craft in the UK.

Evelyn, by comparison to the ones shown later by Popsy, yours appears to have a sexual overtone to it! ;)
    Well, that's what I see!

I have several of these. Late 19th C into early 20th , hammered thin pewter sheet crimped over a brooch frame with a Ruskin cabochon centre. They were commercial not craft, though. Some of mine are signed.

I think hers looks more like a crafter piece of similar ilk.

I buy a few pieces because they are mysteries and I have fun finding out the answers. Definitely worth more than the $2 you paid!

The ones I kept only have silver or sterling silver on back, if marked.[IMG]

About what I figured. Probably not worth a mint, but I had to figure out what it was. Summer camp project is about the size of it.

It's got the "L@@k!!!" - I think you could sell it on the basis of what *I* see in it alone, plus it's got that eyecatching cabichon! ;)

If I have to look for a buyer like one of us, I'd probably be better off throwing it in my hoard. :wacky::wacky:
