Hi,I am new here. Live in Maine and scour the woods next to our rivers a lot. Found this weird piece of what appears to be cast steel. Its aprox. 15 inches long,10 wide. Base metal around 3/16 thick, and conical nobs about 1/4 to 3/8 deep. There are 4 counter sunk holes in the corners and one side has a slight radius, and the other is square. Found on a very old foundation on a riverbank. Any ideas? Cannot load a pic as this forum has a big restriction on file size for some reason? Ok hows that???
Hello and welcome. I guess you will be able to load up pictures after a few messages; because without any it is very hard to judge.
Diamond plate? I don't know, its pretty thin.......not really 3/16 like I thought. more like 1/8 inch. and what about the shape? square on one end and a radius on the other. must be a reason its shaped this way. It was found where a very old barn once stood.
Maybe a boot-scraper, if so would have been mounted flat near ground near an entrance, with curved side located so boot could be scraped on it easily before using the knobby surface.
I thought it might be a scraper as well.,but the knobs are shallow, very close together, and quite round on the top. I took it to every antique dealer in Hallowell Maine which is very close to where I found it and none of them had a clue either. Very strange.
I will guess it's part of an antique corn sheller, something like this... http://www.nofa.org/tnf/fall99/thumbs/sheller3.gif Antique Farm Equipment - Fall 1999 By Jack Kittredge http://www.nofa.org/tnf/fall99/afe.php Or, if you're like Clint Eastwood, you'd use it for this, LOL:
I know. I can remember my dad and grandpa always disgustedly critiquing unrealistic movie and tv gun play.
