What is this wire holder on a brass scale pan?

    Hi, does anyone know the purpose of the wire loop on this brass scale pan? Does it hold something inside the pan? Thanks for any thoughts.

    Looks like. It's shaped wrong for a hanging loop to store it when another one is in use.
