What is this thing?

]Hello everyone new to the forum. I found this a while back and I believe it might be silver going to clean it today. On the back it says KIRKS AI plate England, inside is a round piece of glass. I don't know what this is, I thought maybe a candle holder, coaster or ashtray. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

 

Hi and welcome. It is silver plate and looks like an art deco ashtray. But with the glass liner it may be for butter.

A1 plate means just that - it is silver plated on a base metal.

I image you could use it for that, but with the tips on the side I thought cigarette holder. Since I don't smoke, it would be a coaster if I use it.

 

I cleaned it up a bit with some hot water, aluminum foil and baking soda. My results are below.

 

I believe it to be an ashtray for cigs and cigars.

I agree it is an ashtray. Glass liner made it easier to clean and polish.

The bottom of this pic makes the glass look like it would interfere with a smoke...
Your new pics are better and shows the glass is certainly recessed ..
