    Hi All,
I picked this up some time ago and just trying to make room on a wall for it. I'm not sure what this is, maybe a dog fish/shark? Large piece, 38"L, design on burlap which makes me think 1970s
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking:)

thanks sabre123:) I thought a whale at first but the fin on top and the tail look wrong to me, but I've been wrong many times before:)

It is a Salmon. When the salmon enter the rivers and creeks on their way upstream to spawn, they get a jagged hooked nose happening. Added to that, the picture shows an adipose fin which only members of the salmonidae genus posses.

It would think it's an orca. You can do a Google Images search for both "Haida orca" and "Haida salmon" to compare and decide. But typically a Haida salmon looks like this. The proportions are more fish-like.

Not a whale or orca, but a salmon. With the jagged teeth and nose as mentioned - there might be a specific name for that sort of salmon. But definitely within the normal stylistic parameters for salmon.
But not within the normal parameters for whale or orca; it would have to have a blowhole, indicated in a couple of traditional ways.
These burlap hangings do date to the 70's or so, I don't recall who was making them.

I go fishing at least 3 times a week and live on a salmon stream in the midst of west-coast culture. It is a salmon, probably a pink. Didn't I mention the adipose fin already?
Adipose fin. The adipose fin is a small fleshy fin found posterior to the dorsal fin and anterior of the caudal fin. It is only found on few fish, including trout, salmon, and catfish. When it was named, it was thought to hold fat, or adipose, tissue.

thanks for all the replies folks:)
what do mean the tail is in the wrong direction?

I discounted salmon as the nose/mouth doesn't look right to me but it seems to be the popular choice:), thanks folks
