What is this heavy brass lyre thing?

    Hi, this brass lyre shaped container is about 14 inches tall, and heavy at about 4 1/2 pounds. It's kind of crude, maybe homemade? What do you think it was used for? The only thing I can think of is a planter, but seems an odd design for that. Thanks for any ideas.
